More workers are leaving the country soon to work in different sectors across Australia.
A team of 86 workers are currently attending a Pre-Departure Briefing (PDB) at the St Alban’s church hall organized by the Labour Mobility Unit (LMU) within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade (MFAET).
80 workers are destined for the meat industry across different states, while six workers will work on farms in north Queensland.
Director of External Trade, MFAET, Natalia Patternot reiterated the importance of the briefings as it is an opportunity to be informed of the challenges and opportunities that awaits them in their new work and living environment.
Pre departure briefings are a compulsory information sharing exercise undertaken by the LMU to prepare workers before they leave the country and experience a new environment and culture in Australia.
However, the LMU has recently noticed a recent decline in selected workers attending pre-departure briefings.
Ms. Patternot urged would be workers to attend the PDBs adding that in the future the LMU might look at addressing non-attendance with some disciplinary measures.
The Director also highlighted the report of increasing social issues affecting workers under the scheme, further urging workers to abide by the contracts and SIG agreement they had signed and committed to adherence to labour mobility policies, code of conduct, visa conditions and rules of the scheme they are participating in.
The pre departure briefing was organized by Harrison Kabolo and Alison Magiti of the Labour Mobility Unit.
