The Ambassador of Belgium to the Solomon Islands, His Excellency Michel Goffin has presented his letter of credence to Governor General, His Excellency, Rev David Tipa Kapu on Thursday (31st October 2024)
In his address, the Governor-General highlighted the longstanding partnership between the Kingdom of Belgium and the Solomon Islands, underscoring their shared commitment to tackling global challenges through multilateral forums like the United Nations.
"Climate change remains the greatest threat to our national security and we call for stronger agreements and commitments from larger nations to address the pressing impacts on Small Island States and other vulnerable countries."
Governor-General Kapu emphasized the importance of Belgium's role in the Solomon Islands' diplomatic network, with the establishment of a Solomon Islands Embassy in Brussels and the accreditation of a Belgian Ambassador to the Solomon Islands.
He said these diplomatic channels, have fostered closer collaboration between the two nations and deepened the connection between their peoples.
The Governor-General further commended Belgium's role as a founding member of the European Union, which has extended support to the Solomon Islands under the new Samoa Agreement.
"This agreement reinforces the bonds between our regions, promoting shared values and peaceful cooperation in a complex global landscape," he remarked, noting the Solomon Islands' appreciation for Belgium and the EU’s role in fostering peace and mutual growth in the Pacific region.
He further expressed hope for Belgium’s support in advocating for a permanent EU presence in the Solomon Islands.
Governor-General Kapu concluded by wishing Ambassador Goffin a successful and fulfilling tenure in the Solomon Islands. "May your term bring prosperity, happiness, and strengthen the ties between our nations," he said.
