The Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Peter Shanel Agovaka welcomed the Representative and Country Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Mr. Alpha Bah during a courtesy visit yesterday (4th December 2024).
Minister Agovaka expressed his gratitude to Mr. Bah, who leads the WFP Pacific Multi-Country Office based in Fiji, for making the visit and underscored the significance of this initial engagement.
He emphasized that the meeting marks the beginning of deeper collaboration between Solomon Islands and WFP on shared priorities.
As the Head of WFP in the region, Mr. Bah is expected to work closely with the government of Solomon Islands in the areas of food security, improved nutrition, early warning systems and making sure that WFP activities are coordinated towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The visiting Country Director thanked Minister Agovaka for accepting his official letter of credentials and looks forward to more engagements in the future.
The World Food Programme is present in more than 100 countries and territories and its aim is to respond to emergencies while also providing early warning to reduce impacts of disasters.
Solomon Islands is one of the countries in the region facing challenges with climate change and disasters.
